The island of Crete is of great archeological importance and offers many natural beauties. There are many museums to visit if you would like to discover its rich heritage and know more about its culture, history, artifacts and science.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF HERAKLION

This museum is one of the largest and most notable museums in Greece and one of the most important ones in Europe. The exhibits include representative examples from all periods of the Cretan prehistory and history. What dominates the museum, however, are the masterpieces of Minoan artists.

HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF CRETE IN HERAKLION

The HMC offers a composite view of Cretan history and art from the early Christian centuries to the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions cover a wide span, ranging from Byzantine to modern art, showcasing key literary figures in Greece (Elytis, Kazantzakis), and presenting major historical events from the late 19th century to the Second World War.

NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS MUSEUM

The aim of the museum is to preserve the work as well as to narrate the life of the Cretan writer.  In the exhibition, personal objects of the writer and his family, handwritten work, letters etc  are presented.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF RETHYMNON

Its exhibits, that include findings in caves, settlements and other places, offer a complete presentation of the cultural history of the municipality, starting from the Neolithic years and extending till the time of the Roman occupation.

HISTORICAL AND FOLKLORE MUSEUM OF RETHYMNO

It is housed in a Venetian preserved building of the 17th century.  Its exhibitions extend to 5 rooms and include mainly artefacts of the traditional hand-made crafts and folklore art.

ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF AGIOS NIKOLAOS

It was founded in order to exhibit findings of Eastern Crete. Up until then, these findings were presented at the Museum of Heraklion.  The exhibition has not taken its final form, however, it covers a large time period from the Neolithic Period until the end of the Greek-Roman era.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF CHANIA

The museum aims at promoting the cultural history of the area at the best possible manner, so that it becomes a pole of attraction for visitors, allowing them to admire exhibits from the Neolithic era until the time of Roman occupation.

MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The Museum of Natural History is found in Heraklion, it preserves and develops collections, conducts research on the natural inhabitant, promotes its exhibition areas and the particularities of Crete as well as the Mediterranean.
